TNO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor toegepast-natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNO) is an independent Dutch one of the major contract research organizations in Europe. Based on its expertise and research in technological, policy, business and social innovation, TNO connects people and knowledge in order to create innovations which strengthen the competitive position of companies and enhance societal welfare. With a staff of approximately 3000 and an annual turnover of €565 million, TNO is carrying out research in order to achieve impact on the following seven themes: Healthy Living, Industrial Innovation, Safety, Mobility, Energy, Built Environment and Information Society. TNO functions as an intermediary between basic research organizations and industry. By translating scientific knowledge into practical applications, TNO contributes to the innovation capacity of businesses and government. TNO is involved in many international projects (about 30% of the market turnover), including EU-funded collaborations.
MEDI@4SEC builds upon the on-going EU and national funded work of TNO in the security domain with both technological and social innovations. In particular TNO bring expertise collaborative intelligence, ethical and privacy by design, data integration, and measures to change security perception of citizens. TNOs research is fed back into the policy making process and into commercially exploitable products to help realise sustainable solutions for a safer society.
